I only have two races left in 2010:
1. Whitby 10-miler. I’m running this in VFFs this weekend with two barefoot friends.
2. Tannenbaum 10k. I will be running this in VFFs again with three other people, some of which may be barefoot (on December 12th)!
2010 was really about staying injury free and building my mileage and running my first marathon.
2011 will be all about testing my limits. I feel like I have a solid handle on my body and I know how to stay safe. But I haven’t yet felt like I’ve pushed myself as far as I can go.
2011 is all about challenging myself. Doing things that I never thought possible.
With that in mind, here are the races I have chosen:
1. Around the Bay 30k on March 27th in Hamilton, ON.
I’m going to attempt this either barefoot or in Luna sandals or in VFFs. It depends how my winter training goes. But either way, it will be without shoes. I’ll be aiming for something under 3 hours.
2. Mind the Ducks 12 Hour Run on May 14th in New York.
This is it. This is the big race. MY FIRST ULTRA!
It’s a timed race so I’m not sure exactly how far I’ll go, or even if I can run for the full 12 hours. But I’m sure as hell going to try. I’m making this my official birthmonth race (my birthday is on the 28th), and it’s going to be an important run. I haven’t yet decided what I’ll be wearing on my feet. But most likely it will be a combination of barefoot and shoes.
This race is a half-mile loop. For 12 hours straight. Just the thought of it almost makes me want to puke, which proves that this is the race for me. I’m absolutely insane with excitement! I’ll be trying to keep up with Robert Shackelford and a few other barefoot friends.
3. Toronto Half Marathon on May 15th.
Yes, I do realize that this is the day AFTER my 12 hour run. I also realize that I may have completely lost my mind. But hey, it’s my birthday and I’ll run if I want to.
Hopefully my barefoot friend Robert Shackelford will pace me on this blatant disregard of all things sane. And hopefully I can run this shoeless. Like a proper crazy person.
4. Self-Transcendence 6 Hour Race on June 4th in Kingston, ON.
I will only do this if I can get into a barefoot relay group. So three people running for two hours each. Still waiting for commitments, but it’s quite early. So far I know of one other barefooter who is doing this.
5. Toronto Waterfront Marathon on October 16th.
Let it be known to all that a certain Mr. Robert Shackelford refused to run this marathon with me because he said I would be TOO SLOW for him. So I’m dedicating this race to kicking his ass a thousand times over – and qualifying for the New York marathon before he does. I need a sub 3:30 time.
I know it’s doable if I truly focus and whip my ass into shape. Sadly, what he doesn’t realize is that so far I’ve just been messing around. But if I WANTED to beat him… I could. He also seems to be under the impression that I NEED him to pace me. Which I actually don’t. I only gave him the privilege of doing so.
On top of that he had the balls to say I couldn’t beat him because I was a) a female, b) Hispanic, and c) Canadian. Which means I have NO other choice but to completely destroy him. So now it’s on.
