I should add that runners can get away with eating more carbs than your average Paleo dieter, but I'm definitely low carb. I know of other Paleo runner/crossfitters who do eat more carbs, especially yams. Some avoid dairy, I don't. Whatever works.

Paleo is definitely low carb! I easily run 2 hours a day on low carb and I can't remember the last time I had fruit or Yams. I try to go 60% fat/30%protein/10% carbs. I cheat once a week, but that doesn't count.
If you're not eating low carb, you are not eating primally. I can't imagine anyone preferring to eat the SAD (Standard American Diet) over Paleo, but that's just me. Breakfast is coffee and whipping cream. lunch is bacon and eggs or a salad, dinner is meat and cooked vegetables.
The only time I go higher carb is during long runs (2+ hours), or the night before a race. Or on a road trip. Or if it's someone's birthday. Or a holiday.Or half price wing night.

Overall this is a great piece. Just please don't say ~ "The primal diet should be.. low carb." It's actually carb agnostic. As a coach this is where most people screw up and fail with the paleo diet.

If you crossfit twice a day or run 2hrs a day you should go out of your way to eat more carbs. Thatcan be done within the strict paleo diet with fruit and yams, etc. Or as you have discovered you can eat more like Joe Friel's Paleo for Athletes. No matter what the diet it needs to be altered for activity level. So please don't say paleo is "low-carb" because I think that idea will simply cause some athletes to blow out and quit.

I loved your report!! I have done 2 R2R2Rs and in preparing, had read that there were not many mountain lions in the grand canyon so I never worried about them. My last R2R2R was on May 3 and I started at 2am down Bright Angel...makes me shudder to think about running into one. The scorpion was also pretty freaky -- much worse than the two snakes I almost ran over on the trail...nevertheless, I'll be back there not soon enough.

Fantastic report! And great pictures. I could never do the Tree Pose on the edge of the canyon like that! You scare me just looking at the picture. I'll have to do R2R2R2 sometime...ah there are so many runs on my bucket list.

Three of our friends did it last year and loved it so much that they organized a larger group this year. Most of us are from the same trail running group (Dirt Devils) but a wonderful few took care of all the organizing and logistics. We were definitely lucky - we didn't have to do a thing except run. They've scheduled it again for next year, on the full moon in April.

Not everyone did R2R2R - some just went R2R, which is also a beautiful experience. Just under 20 miles. You can also break up the run into 2 days if you have the time. Either way, it's worth the experience!

Wow, just wow. So inspiring, vivid, exciting, infectious - I want to go there. It is nice how you and Shacky are strong at different points to pull each other thru. What an awesome experience. How did you find out about this group, was it an organized event or just heard of some friends going and went for it? I am both intrigued by and scared by the idea of doing something like this.
